In our household, One of the best remedies if one is under the weather with cold/flu has been this Menasina Saaru | Pepper Rasam. Its also called Haalu Menasina Saaru | ಹಾಲು ಮೆಣಸಿನ ಸಾರು because it has milk in it
A slight variation of this recipe is also a part of Bananthana (Post Partum Care) in Kannada homes. I will get to that recipe later
How To Make Haalu Menasina Saaru
Serves 4
You Will Need:
- 2 teaspoon Urad Dal
- 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds/Jeera
- 1 teaspoon Whole black Pepper
- 2 tablespoon fresh grated coconut
- 1.5 cups water
- 2 cups milk
- Salt
To Temper:
- 1 teaspoon Ghee
- 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
- A big pinch of Asafoetida/Hing
- 4-5 curry leaves
- 1 broken red chili
How To:
In a Pan, dry roast Urad Dal, cumin seeds & whole black Pepper until the dal slightly changes color & is aromatic.
Transfer to a mixer jar & grind along with 2 tablespoons of coconut into a smooth paste.
Heat water in a pot, add the ground paste into it. Add some salt & let it come to a boil.
Add milk & simmer for a couple of minutes & turn off the heat
Heat ghee in a small pan, temper with Mustard seeds, Asafoetida, Curry Leaves & Red chili. Pour the tempering into Saaru & mix well
Serve with Hot steamed rice with a dollop of ghee. You can even drink this as is
